The Lick Break: A Simple Daily Habit for Dogs Who Can't Settle

Restless during your work calls, underfoot at dinner, wild at 8 p.m.? A frozen, filled toy gives your dog a calm, focused job for the moments you need one.

Your dog has been walked, fed and loved on. And yet here they are: nudging your elbow during a video call, staring at your plate at dinner, or tearing laps around the sofa at 8 p.m. for no reason you can see.

Nothing is wrong with your dog. They just have energy left over, and most of it isn’t the kind a walk burns off.

Why dogs get restless at home

Dogs are built to spend a good part of the day working for food: sniffing it out, licking, chewing, figuring things out. A modern dog’s dinner comes in a bowl and disappears in about a minute. That leaves a lot of brain unused.

A walk tires the legs. It doesn’t always tire the mind. So the restlessness tends to show up at predictable times:

  • When you’re home but busy, working, cooking or on the phone
  • Mid-afternoon, especially on days with a shorter walk
  • Evenings, the classic zoomies window, very common in young dogs
  • Around your comings and goings, when the house routine changes

What a “lick break” is

A lick break is a short, planned slot of calm, focused activity. Your dog gets a frozen, food-filled toy and spends the next stretch licking and gently chewing it.

Why licking? It’s slow, rhythmic and something dogs do naturally. Compare it to fetch or tug, which rev a dog up. Licking and sniffing go the other way. Many owners find their dog is noticeably more settled after a session, and that’s the point: you’re not just keeping them busy, you’re giving them a calm way to spend the energy.

The other big benefit is predictability. When the lick break happens at the same moments every day, your dog learns that those moments mean “quiet time with something good.”

When to schedule it

Moment Why it helps Tip
Work calls or focus time Gives your dog a job while you need yours Hand it over two minutes before the call starts
Your dinner Keeps them busy instead of begging Feed it on their bed or mat, not under the table
Evening zoomies Swaps a high-energy hour for a calm one Offer it after a short sniffy walk, not instead of one
Before you head out Makes your getting-ready routine something good Serve it while you’re still home
Grooming or nail time Keeps their focus on the food Use a flat toy so you can hold it

A note on leaving the house: no chew toy is indestructible, and Freezbone’s own guidance is to stay nearby while your dog uses one. So for longer absences, build the lick break into your getting-ready routine, or have a sitter or walker hand it over. One owner does exactly that:

“When we leave for a trip, I fill up each day’s “treat” with a blend of our boxer-pitt’s favourites and throw them into a bag in the freezer. The person caring for our dog gives one each day so Henry can have a long lasting experience.” (Rebecca F.)

What makes a good lick-break toy

  • Different shapes for different lengths of break. A flat, grooved toy for a lick-heavy session. A deep cup for a long one.
  • Tough natural rubber, so it survives daily use.
  • Easy to fill and easy to clean. If it’s a hassle, you’ll stop doing it.
  • Sized for your dog, so it can’t be swallowed.

What owners say

Several reviews describe the same everyday moments: chores, dinner, the treadmill, the afternoon with no second walk. Owners also mention using different toys for different lengths of break:

“The small ones we use for a quick treat and the larger ones when we want him settled for a longer time.” (Julie S.)

How to set up your lick break routine

1. Batch-fill once or twice a week. Fill all three toys at once and keep them in the freezer, so there’s always one ready when you need it.

2. Pick your fillings. Wet dog food, plain unsweetened yogurt, pumpkin purée, mashed banana with xylitol-free peanut butter, or kibble topped with dog-safe broth. Layer thick fillings at the bottom and top, with runnier ones in the middle.

“Jude LOVES his FreezBones! I’ve used kibble, bone broth and a dog bone, and peanut butter and bananas, and bananas and blueberries. I give him one when we return from our afternoon walk/hike and he really enjoys them.”Deb M. · FreezBall · Verified buyer

3. Freeze. Two to three hours works. Overnight is better.

4. Start easy. For the first few sessions, pack it loosely or freeze it only partly so your dog gets an early win. Then make it harder.

5. Match the toy to the moment. The FreezSwirl for a quick lick break, the FreezBall for everyday, the FreezJumbo when you need the longest stretch.

6. Serve, stay nearby, then clean. Rinse or pop it on the dishwasher’s top rack, and it’s ready to refill.

Count the fillings as part of your dog’s daily food. Plenty of owners simply serve part of a regular meal this way.

The bottom line

A restless dog at home usually doesn’t need more stuff. They need something to do with their brain. Two or three lick breaks a day, at the moments your household gets hectic, can turn the hardest parts of the day into the quietest.

If you’d like a ready-made set to start with, the Best Seller Bundle gives you three shapes for three kinds of break. Read the reviews and check the price for your country.

Questions people ask

  • Rinse under warm water or put them on the top rack of the dishwasher. They're ready to refill right away.

  • Anything soft or pourable that's safe for dogs: wet food, plain yogurt, pumpkin, mashed banana, bone broth with kibble, or xylitol-free peanut butter. Avoid grapes, onions, chocolate and anything with xylitol.

  • The bundle comes in one size, made for dogs up to 90 lb (about 40 kg). For puppies, seniors or dogs with sensitive teeth, let the frozen fill soften for a few minutes and start with something soft like yogurt.

  • No toy is indestructible, so Freezbone's guidance is to stay nearby, check the toy before each use, and take it away if it cracks or pieces go missing. For longer absences, a sitter or dog walker can hand it over.

  • It varies by dog and filling. Freezbone says most dogs work on a frozen fill for 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Fuller, colder fills last longer, and wet food or yogurt outlasts broth alone.
