West Paw's Toppl and Freezbone's Freezball solve the same problem. Both are open cups you fill with food, freeze, and hand to your dog for a long, slow lick. And both are much easier to clean than a classic stuffable toy.

So which one should you buy? We compared the material, sizes, prices and guarantees, and read what owners say.

The short version

  • Material: Freezball is 100% natural rubber. Toppl is made from Zogoflex, a plastic-based material West Paw makes in Montana.
  • Price: Freezball costs less at every size. Small: $15.95 vs. $20.95. Large: $23.95 vs. $25.95. XL: $26.95 vs. $29.95.
  • Sizes: Freezball comes in four sizes. Toppl comes in three.
  • No side hole: Toppl has a side hole. To keep broth or water inside, West Paw sells a Toppl Stopper for $9.95 extra. A Freezball has no holes, so you just pour and freeze.

Natural rubber vs. Zogoflex

Freezbone toys are 100% natural rubber, the same kind of material as classic stuffable toys. It's soft to lick and has a little give when a dog chews.

West Paw's Zogoflex is a plastic-based material it makes in Bozeman, Montana. It's latex-free, which matters if your dog has a latex allergy.

Sizes and price

The Freezball comes in four sizes, so it's easier to match to your dog. Its list price is lower at every size, and the Buy 2, Get 1 Free deal brings the cost down more if you want a few in rotation.

One honest note: size for size, the small Toppl holds a bit more. One owner who has both measured it.

“Love the quality & size options of the FreezBall. I struggled a bit to figure out the right size for me, so my video shows a comparison to other comparable products (not this brand). The small FreezBall fits about 2 Tbsp (about a shot glass) & the Med about 4 Tbsp (2 shot glasses). For comparison the Small Toppl fits 3 Tbsp & the Smallest SodaPup Honey Pot fits 8 Tbsp. Of the three similar products, I like the FreezBall the best!!” (Dana M.)

“We got three - the star, this cup and the donut. He loves them all. They are durable and easy to fill. We give him half of his meals in one of the freezebones. So much better (and less expensive) than the Toppl. Will be purchasing more!”Chris Vaughn V. · Verified Freezbone buyer

No side hole, no extra plug

Toppl has a hole in its side. West Paw's own advice is to pair it with the Toppl Stopper "to block Toppl's side hole to keep liquids safely inside." The Stopper is sold separately for $9.95, and West Paw says it's not a toy, so it has to come out before your dog gets the Toppl. Add it to a small Toppl and you're at $30.90, compared with $15.95 for a small Freezball.

A Freezball has no side hole and no bottom hole. The only opening is the wide top. Pour in bone broth or water over kibble and toppings, stand it in the freezer, and you're done. Nothing to plug, nothing extra to buy.

“Sully loves his FreezerBowl. It's great because it doesn't leak. Easy to fill and freeze.” (Kimberly E.)

“We are absolutely loving these! Easy to prep whether you are using the Freezbone fillers, keeping it simple by freezing water or doing something creative- the options are endless! They keep your pet engaged for quite a while, and they are very durable. The self standing Freezbones are a great no spill idea during the freezing process. I also love how easy they are to clean!” (Alissa B.)

Long noses, flat bases

A Freezball has a wide top and a wide, flat bottom. It stands up on its own in the freezer and doesn't roll away while your dog licks. Owners with long-nosed breeds and small mouths say their dogs can reach all the way down.

“Love the size for my 7 mo Doberman puppy! It is easier for him to get his long nose in and eat all the good stuff than a West Paw Topl...so way easier clean up for me!” (Julie S.)

“Our Junie loves her Freezbones! We fill the Freezballs with lots of goodies, and she is COMMITTED for 30-40 minutes at a time. We also have the doughnut and looking to get more! They have flat bottoms so they’re easy to stack in the freezer, and they don’t roll around when she licking them. One of the best puppy purchases we’ve made!”Debbie L. · Verified Freezbone buyer

“My puppy has a small mouth and was unable to get to the bottom of other popular brands. Licky matts didn’t last long enough. Our trainer recommended Freezbone. A frozen Freezball keeps her busy and she’s able to lick it clean.” (Ebba H.)

Freezbone also makes other shapes, like the spiral FreezSwirl, which owners say is a longer lick, and the FreezJumbo, which holds up to 3 cups for big dogs.

“We love Freezebone! This spiral one takes my dog longer to work through, as he has to get in every nook and edge. They clean easy, and can be easily stacked in the freezer.”Lauren R. · Verified Freezbone buyer

Our verdict

Both are easy to fill and easy to wash. But the Freezball gives you natural rubber, a flat base, more sizes and a lower price at every size. If you want a few in rotation, it's the better value.

“I don’t know what kind of dog psychology yall tapped into with these. I got the freezbox, freezlava, and freezball - all three have been way more effective than any other food enrichment objects I’ve gotten for my 9 month old heeler. Between kongs, toppls, pupsicles, various slow feeders, sniff mats, lick mats, treat dispensers…they do not even compare to the freezbone products. Love them!!! And so does Ozzy ☺️” (Angie K.)
