The hardest part of frozen toys isn't the toy. It's remembering to fill one the night before.

The owners who stick with it all do the same thing: they prep a batch once and keep a rotation going. Here's how to set one up in about 15 minutes a week, which toys to pick for your dog, and why this week is the cheapest time to start.

Editor's note: Freezbone's Prime Day Sale runs October 7 to 12. Buy 4 or more and save 25%, which is exactly a starter rotation. No code needed. See the deals.

Why one toy isn't enough

A frozen toy spends most of its life in the freezer. It needs a few hours to freeze solid, and overnight is best. Then it's in your dog's paws, then in the dishwasher. With just one, you're always waiting on it.

With four, the loop runs itself:

  • One with your dog
  • One in the dishwasher
  • Two in the freezer, ready for tomorrow and the day after

Two dogs, or two frozen meals a day? Double it.

“The freeze box is 100% the best option for our 1 year old Labrador(super chewer). Saving my socks 1 freeze box at a time. We have 4 so far and plan to get more so 1 is ready for each day of the week. Adding a duck foot has extended the quiet time even longer!” (Christinefzb M.)

Step 1: Prep once a week

Pick one night, like Sunday. Fill all your toys at once, stand them up in the freezer, and you're set for days. Most Freezbone toys have flat bottoms, so they sit on a freezer shelf without tipping.

“Loving the Freezbone products! I now have a few for both of our newly adopted rescue dogs. I prepare them for a few days and put them in the freezer. Our dogs look forward to them as a “dessert” in the early evening.”Coleen F. · Verified Freezbone buyer

“I love this set the most!! I like the size and shape of the square and round purple ones. The wheel ones were also good. All high quality and very durable and clean up great in the dishwasher!! My girls love them and get super excited when I start filling them for the week.”Diana M. · Verified Freezbone buyer

Step 2: Mix up the fillings

Same toy, different filling, and your dog stays curious. Here's an easy week to start with:

DayFilling idea
MonKibble soaked in low-sodium bone broth
TuePlain Greek yogurt with blueberries
WedPlain pumpkin purée (not pie filling) with mashed banana
ThuTheir usual wet food with a few carrot coins
FriCottage cheese with apple pieces (no seeds or core)
SatKibble and water with a swirl of xylitol-free peanut butter
SunSweet potato and green beans, topped with broth

Count frozen meals as part of your dog's daily food, and check with your vet if your dog has a sensitive stomach. Skip grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate and anything with xylitol.

Step 3: Grab, wash, repeat

When you need a quiet half hour, grab the oldest one from the freezer. When your dog is done, rinse it and put it in the dishwasher. Refill it on prep night. That's the whole system.

“This donut is a great size for a little treat and it keeps my puppy busy when I leave the house. This one is loaded with peanut butter and kibble. I sometimes use yogurt and bananas, too! I keep a few ready in the freezer at all times!”Sarijane M. · Verified Freezbone buyer

Which four? Pick by your dog

Mixing shapes keeps things interesting, and every toy counts toward the sale discount. A few good starting points:

  • Puppies and small dogs: the Freezball in small or medium, the FreezStar or the Freez Doughnut. Smaller toys freeze faster, too.
  • Big dogs and full meals: the FreezJumbo (the biggest size holds up to 3 cups), the Freezball XL or the Freezflower Cup.
  • Strong chewers: the FreezBox and FreezLava, Freezbone's thickest, heavy-duty shapes.
  • Fast lickers: the FreezSwirl and FreezWheel. Their spirals and grooves take longer to lick clean.

“I got these for both my dogs and they love them! This one is the perfect size for my senior guy and the small one is perfect for my 5 month old mini Dauschund puppy! I make one for them everyday!” (Mary G.)

Just in time for cozy season

Shorter days and cold, rainy evenings usually mean shorter walks. A frozen toy gives your dog a job indoors, and fall flavors like pumpkin and sweet potato make easy fillings. Freezbone even has a pumpkin-shaped one, the FreezPumpkin.

“One of the best things I have bought for my dogs! It is a great way to settle them down when they get too. Rambunctious. It was saved us all from rainy day boredom Filling them was sort of like packing a lunch for my kids, except the dogs actually eat all of it” (Paige B.)
